Towing weight (braked/unbraked)

The maximum trailer mass a car may tow, stated separately for braked and unbraked trailers.

The towing weight is the heaviest trailer a car may tow under type approval. It is always stated in two figures. Unbraked applies to light trailers without their own braking system and usually sits around 600 to 750 kg. Braked applies to trailers with an overrun brake and sits considerably higher, depending on model and drivetrain often between 750 and 2,500 kg.

Many fully electric cars may tow less than comparable petrol or diesel models, or are not approved for a tow bar, because the drivetrain and the mass are loaded differently. That is not a shortcoming but a type-approval choice by the manufacturer; check it per variant.

The values on this site are manufacturer statements per model. What is binding is always the registration document and the type plate of the specific vehicle: those carry the legally valid maxima, which differ per variant and model year. A car towing a heavier load also calls for checking the permitted noseweight and the driving licence; that is not advice but a factual point of attention.
