Boot volume (VDA)

Luggage space measured with the standardised VDA method using 1-litre blocks.

Boot volume under the VDA standard is a standardised measurement by the German automotive trade body. The space is filled with test blocks of 200 by 100 by 50 millimetres, each 1 litre, so that the stated figure is comparable between brands. Many manufacturers give two values: with the rear seat upright and with the seat folded down.

A VDA litre is not a freely usable litre. The block method leaves space around wheel arches and under parcel shelves unused that is partly usable in practice, while an irregular shape can yield a high figure that fits large suitcases poorly. Two cars with the same litre count can therefore load differently in practice.

Not every manufacturer measures strictly to VDA, and some state SAE or own values that turn out slightly higher. Where we have the VDA statement we show it as a manufacturer statement; if another standard is stated, we name that so the comparison stays fair.
