CCS (Combined Charging System)
The European DC fast-charge standard: a Type 2 plug extended with two extra pins for direct current.
CCS stands for Combined Charging System and is the dominant DC fast-charge standard in Europe. The plug combines the familiar Type 2 connection for alternating current (AC) with two extra contacts below it for direct current (DC). One plug shape thus covers both slow charging at home and fast charging on the road; the car itself selects which part is active.
Almost every fully electric car sold new in Europe from about 2019 onwards has CCS as its DC port. The older CHAdeMO standard, mainly on Japanese brands, is no longer fitted to new European models. In Europe Tesla also runs on CCS and has gradually opened its Supercharger network for it. The charging power is not set by the plug but by the car and the charger together.
On the spec sheets we show the connector type as a factual property of the drivetrain. Which charging networks and which power levels are available on your route, and at what tariff, depends on your charge card and falls outside our scope.
